For the family

Your photo frame: a guide for the family

This guide is for the people who use the frame. It has three short parts:

  • Part 1 is for the person who has the frame on the wall. It is made to be printed and kept beside the frame.
  • Part 2 is for family members who want to send a card from a phone.
  • Part 3 is for family members who want to send photos from a phone.

If you are looking for how to set up a frame, this is the wrong page. Ask the person who set up the frame, or see Part 4.

Part 1: If the frame is on your wall

You do not need to do anything to keep the frame working. It shows your photos by itself. Family can send you cards, and the cards arrive by themselves too.

This page tells you what you will see and what to do if something looks odd.

What you will see

Most of the time, the frame shows photos. A new photo appears every half minute or so.

If nobody touches the frame for a couple of minutes, it goes back to the photos. This is normal. It is not a problem.

Opening the menu

To see the menu, touch the screen once while the photos are showing.

A column of buttons slides in from the left side. It stays for a few seconds, then slides away again.

You can touch any button. Nothing you touch can break the frame.

The buttons on the left

You may see some or all of these. The person who set up your frame chooses which ones are there.

Button What it shows
Home The time, the weather, and today's plans on one screen.
Pictures The photos, filling the whole screen.
Weather The weather now, the next 24 hours, and the days ahead.
Week Your plans for this week.
Home Assistant The controls for your smart home, such as lights.
Mailbox Your cards. This button only appears when you have cards.
Dim Turns the screen dark. Touch the screen to wake it.

On some screens, a Back button appears in the top-left corner. Touch it to return to Home.

Cards from family

Family can send you a card from their phones. Here is how it works.

  1. A small picture, like a postage stamp, appears at the edge of the photos.
  2. Touch the stamp.
  3. The front of the card opens in the middle of the screen.
  4. Touch the card to open it.
  5. The cover lifts and you can read the message.
  6. Touch the card again to close it.

A few things to know:

  • A card waits for you as long as you like. It does not disappear if you do not open it right away.
  • Up to five stamps show at once. If there are more, one stamp says + and a number. Touch it to see them all in the Mailbox.
  • While a card is open, the photos stop changing so you can read in peace.
  • If you walk away, the card closes by itself after a few minutes.

Your Mailbox

Once you have opened a card, it moves to your Mailbox. Touch Mailbox in the menu to see your cards. Touch any card to read it again.

Cards stay in the Mailbox for a while after you open them, up to 30 days. The bottom of the Mailbox page always tells you how long. After that, they are cleared away to make room for new ones.

The Mailbox button shows a small number when you have cards you have not opened yet.

Nighttime

The frame goes dark by itself at bedtime. It lights up again by itself in the morning. You do not need to turn anything off or on.

If you touch the screen during the night, it lights up so you can see it. That first touch only wakes the screen. It does not press anything.

After you wake it at night, it stays lit. To put it back to sleep, touch the screen once to show the menu, then touch Dim. Otherwise, it goes dark again at the next bedtime.

If something looks wrong

Stay calm. Almost every problem fixes itself. Go through these steps in order.

  1. Wait one minute. The frame often fixes itself.
  2. Look at the screen. If it says "Connecting to Wi-Fi", the frame is looking for your internet. This is normal for about half a minute after the frame is plugged in. It can take a little longer. Wait a few minutes.
  3. Unplug the frame, count to ten, and plug it back in. Then wait three minutes. It may show a few plain messages while it starts up. That is normal.
  4. Still not right? Call the person who set up your frame. Tell them what the screen says. Reading the words out loud is enough.

A small "offline" message

You may sometimes see a small message near a corner of the screen that says offline since and a time. It means the frame cannot reach the internet right now. The frame keeps trying by itself. New cards and photos will arrive once it is back.

If it stays for more than an hour, check that your Wi-Fi is on, then call the person who set up your frame.

A list of Wi-Fi networks

If your router was changed, or the Wi-Fi password was changed, the frame may show a list of Wi-Fi networks on its own. You can leave this alone and call the person who set up your frame.

A screen asking for a PIN

Some screens may ask for a PIN. Do not worry about this. It is only for the person who set up your frame. You will never need it.

If you see it, leave it alone and call them.

Things you never need to do

  • You never need to turn the frame off. It looks after itself.
  • You never need to update anything.
  • You never need to log in.
  • You never need to type anything on the frame.
  • You never need to delete photos or cards to make room.

If you are not sure about something, call the person who set up your frame. They would much rather hear from you than have you worry.

Part 2: Sending a card

This part is for family members who want to send a card to the frame. When you finish, your card will show up on the frame as a small stamp.

You need:

  • A phone with an internet connection.
  • Your personal card link. The person who set up the frame sends it to you.

Your link belongs to you. Please do not share it with others.

Send a card

  1. Open your card link on your phone. The page says Cards for and the name of the person who gets the cards.
  2. Check that the page says Sending as and your name.
  3. Select Send a card.

Step 1: Pick a card

  1. Choose a group, such as Birthday, Thank you, or Get well.
  2. Select a cover you like. A check mark shows which one you picked.
  3. If you do not see one you like, select Show more.
  4. Select Next: Write your note.

Step 2: Write your note

  1. In the box under Your message, type your note.
  2. Watch the preview above the box. It shows how your words will look on the card.
  3. To see the front of the card, select Front. To see the inside, select Inside.
  4. Select Next: Sign your card.

Your note can have up to 400 characters and up to 8 lines. If it is too long, the page tells you and the button stays gray until you shorten it. Short notes appear in bigger letters, which are easier to read on the frame.

Step 3: Sign your card

  1. Use your finger to write your name in the box that says Sign here.
  2. If you make a mistake, select Undo to take back the last line. Select Clear to start your signature again.
  3. If you would rather type, select Type my name instead.
  4. Select Send to and the name.
  5. A box asks Send this card to the name. Check the cover, then select Send card.

Turn your phone sideways to get more room to sign.

Once you select Send card, you cannot change the card or take it back. If you are not ready, select Not yet.

After you send

You see Sent. Your card shows up on the frame as a stamp within a minute or so. To send another, select Send another card.

If you leave the page before you finish, your card is saved on your phone. Open your link again to carry on where you stopped. To begin again, select Start over.

What the other person sees

  1. A small stamp with your cover appears on the frame.
  2. They touch the stamp and the front of your card opens.
  3. They touch the card, and the cover lifts.
  4. They read your message, and your signature draws itself, line by line.

After they close it, the card moves to their Mailbox for up to 30 days.

See if your card was opened

  1. Open your card link.
  2. Under My cards, find your card.

Each card says either Not opened yet or Opened, with the day and time. The time is the time where the frame is.

To see the whole card again, select it. Select Front to see the cover. If the list looks out of date, select Refresh.

Your privacy

Only you and the frame can read your message.

The person who set up the frame can see that you sent a card, when you sent it, which cover you chose, and whether it was opened. They cannot read what you wrote or see your signature. If they look at the frame from far away, an open card is hidden from them.

If you cannot send a card

What you see What to do
This link isn't working anymore Your link has been turned off or is wrong. Ask the person who set up the frame for a new one.
You've sent a lot of cards just now You can send up to 6 cards an hour and 20 a day. Wait the number of minutes it says.
You already have 10 cards waiting Ten of your cards have not been opened yet. Try again after some are opened.
The mailbox is full right now There are a lot of unopened cards. Try again after some are opened.
Cards aren't being delivered right now Cards are turned off for now. Ask the person who set up the frame.

Part 3: Sending photos

This part is for family members who want to add photos to the frame. When you finish, your photos are waiting to be approved. After that, they show on the frame.

You need:

  • A phone with an internet connection.
  • Your photo link. The person who set up the frame sends it to you.

Send photos

  1. Open your photo link on your phone. The page says Send photos to the frame.
  2. Select Choose photos.
  3. Your phone shows your photos. Pick one or more.
    • iPhone: pick Photo Library, touch the photos you want, then select Add or Done.
    • Android: pick Photos or Gallery, touch the photos you want, then confirm.
  4. The photos start sending. Each one says Sent when it is done.
  5. To add more, select Choose more photos.

When all photos are sent, you see how many were sent and "Thank you!"

Please keep the page open until it finishes. If you leave while photos are still sending, your phone warns you first.

Why your photos do not show right away

Photos you send are not shown straight away. Someone checks each one first. Your page says: "Your photos will appear on the frame after they're approved."

This is on purpose. It means only photos the family wants end up on the wall. Sending the same photo twice does no harm.

How many photos you can send

  • Each photo can be up to 30 MB. Almost every phone photo is much smaller.
  • Photos from iPhones and Androids both work. So do most other photo types.
  • The page tells you how many more photos you can send right now.
  • Usually you can send about 100 photos an hour and 300 a day.

If a photo does not send

What you see What to do
That isn't a photo The file is not a picture. Pick a photo instead.
Too big The photo is larger than the limit. Pick a smaller one.
That file is empty Pick a different photo.
Couldn't use this one. Try a different photo. The frame cannot use that picture. Try another.
Something went wrong. Tap Try again. Select Try again.
No connection. Check your signal, then tap Try again. Check your signal, then select Try again. Photos already sent are safe.
You've sent a lot of photos Wait a while, then select Try again.
The frame can't take photos right now The frame's storage is full or busy. Try again later, or tell the person who set up the frame.
This link isn't working anymore, has expired, or has been turned off Ask the person who set up the frame for a new link.

Part 4: For the person who set it up

Setting up and looking after the frame: see the documentation index.

To print Part 1 for the frame's owner: open this page in your browser and choose Print. Part 1 is the first few pages. Print only those pages (the print preview shows where Part 2 starts). Choose a large paper size or a larger print scale so the text is easy to read.

Also write your own phone number at the top of the printed page. Part 1 says "call the person who set up your frame", so make sure they know who that is.
